Hiring Arborist FAQs

Hiring the wrong tree guy can be detrimental to your property. Improper techniques can injure or even kill great trees. Use these questions when determining if the tree guy you are hiring is an arborist, or a tree butcher. Be on the lookout for people who don’t have the best interests of both you and your trees in mind.

Question 1: Do you have ISA certified arborists?

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) employs rigorous testing and continuing education to get and maintain certification. Consequently, certified arborists are more up-to-date on the latest science and techniques. You can ask to see their certification card, or check them out online at the ISA website.

Question 2: What are your standards of work?

Your tree guys should discuss the methods and equipment they will use to care for your trees. They should be using ISA and OSHA approved safety equipment and techniques. If the job involves removing large quantities of debris, ask about heavy equipment and the amount of foreseeable damage to lawns and hardscapes. Sustainable Tree Care has a variety of equipment they can use to minimize tracks, ruts, and other property damage.

Question 3: Are you fully insured against property damage and personal injury?

You should never be held liable to personal injury that occurs on your property as a result of work from contractors. Accidents do happen, but Sustainable Tree Care has full worker’s compensation coverage as well as property damage insurance. When we leave, the only difference you should see is more beautiful, healthier trees. Ask any tree care company to show you proof of their insurance coverage before agreeing to hire them.

Question 4: What is the time frame for the work to be done?

A professional tree company who has experience should be able to accurately estimate the amount of time your job will take. Avoid companies who make claims of completing large jobs in a short amount of time, or those who will not give you an exact start date. Barring bad weather or emergencies, tree work should be started on time and finish within a reasonable amount of time.

Question 5: Do you use environmentally-friendly techniques and products?

If they truly care about trees, a tree care company will strive to take care of them right. Environmentally-friendly, organic products will help protect your trees and the surrounding flora, as well as avoiding poisoning groundwater supplies. Sustainable tree care practices can help keep your trees healthy for years to come.

Question 6: What references can I contact?

If a company is truly reputable, they should have at least one or two past clients who are willing to vouch for their work. Sustainable Tree Care has numerous testimonials and reference available upon request.
